Mallorca is a beautiful Mediterranean island that is easily reached from Barcelona. Part of the Balearic Islands, which also includes Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera, the islands are located just off the coast of the mainland between Barcelona and Valencia.
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic islands and has a laid back style and miles of great beaches. It is the perfect place to visit if you want to explore beautiful natural landscapes, enjoy all types of water sports or just do nothing at all. While you can come to Mallorca to do nothing, you can also come to discover the main attractions of its capital city, Palma.
The following is a list of some of the things to see in Palma:
- La Seu Cathedral – a magnificent Gothic cathedral that is the city’s most emblematic monument. Construction began in 1230 and continued over the next 400 years
- Almudaina Palace – located opposite the Cathedral, construction of this Arabian Fort was begun by the Moors and completed in the 13th C. and became a royal residence. It is used today by the Royal Family for ceremonies and State receptions
- Placa Major – main square in the Old Town
- Arab Baths – some of the last remnants from the Arab city then known as Medina Mayurqa, dating back to the 10th – 12th C.
- Castillo de Bellver – unique round castle, begun in 1300, that is a well-preserved royal fortress
- Parc de la Mar – popular weekend and summer space that is a public space in front of the Cathedral
- Sa Llotja – 15th C. sandstone building near the Almudaina Palace was designed by famed architect Guillem Sagrera and served as the merchant’s stock exchange. It is now a cultural center that is used for temporary exhibitions
- Museu de Mallorca – impressive archaeology and fine arts collections, housed in a 16th C. mansion
- Es Baluard – museum of modern and contemporary art
- Passeig des Born – tree-lined promenade that is at the heart of city life, with cafes, restaurants and boutiques; it is a popular place to enjoy an evening stroll
- Market Hall (Mercat de l’Olivat) – central market located next to the Old Town
