The town of Évora, located in the Alentejo region, is a great place to visit for travelers interested in history. Located an hour and a half east of Lisbon, it makes for a perfect day trip or overnight stay. With our Pousada and hotel offerings, you can easily combine luxury accommodations with some spectacular sites that have histories that date as far back as the Middle Ages.
Évora is known for its stunning medieval walls, unique churches and a 16th century aqueduct designed by military architect Francisco de Arruda. For these reasons, the town has been designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Be sure to check out the historic aqueduct, which is known as Água de Prata Aqueduct. Originally built between 1531 and 1537 to supply the city with water, this structure has great historical significance to the region and even popped up in an epic poem be Luis de Camoes.
Other notable sites to see while visiting Évora include:
- Temple of Diana (2nd-3rd C. Roman temple)
- Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones)
- Cathedral (12th C. Cathedral that is the largest cathedral in Portugal)
- S. Brás Chapel
- Saint Frances Church
Beyond the great historic sites, the Alentejo region of Portugal is one of the country’s top wine producing regions, and much of the production is centered around the historic town of Évora. The unique climate is responsible for the high quality of grapes that are grown in the region, so make sure you take time to visit one or more of the top wine cellars.
