The collection was assembled by Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and his son Hans Heinrich, and was originally housed in the family’s estate in Lugano, Switzerland. In 1985 the Baron married Carmen Cervera, a former Miss Spain, and with her influence the collection was moved to Madrid when they were unable to enlarge the family estate in Lugano. The museum opened in 1992, and in 1993 the Spanish government purchased 775 works of art from the family. The collection was supplemented with 429 paintings that are on loan from the Baroness’ own private collection, and today has over 1,600 works of art.
The collection showcases a wide variety of art, from 13th-14th century Italian, German and Flemish religious paintings, to 20th century works that span from cubism to pop art. With over 1 million visitors a year, it is clear that the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum is a must see site for art lovers during their stay in Madrid.
The museum is open daily, and is closed for holidays on January 1, May 1, and December 25. For more information, including opening hours, ticket prices and advance ticket sales, click here.
