The Oceanário de Lisboa (Oceanarium) is the second largest indoor aquarium in Europe, after L’Oceanogràfic in Valencia, Spain. It is located in Lisbon in the Parque das Nações, which was the site of the 1998 Expo.
The aquarium houses over 15,000 living creatures from 450 different species. They are arranged by different habitats with their native flora and fauna, representing the ecosystems of the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The four tanks are separated from the main tank using acrylic walls, which gives the illusion that all of the creatures are swimming in the same space.
Visitors can marvel at the variety of marine species, including penguins, seagulls, sea otters, sharks, stingrays, barracudas, moray eels, starfish, sea urchins, corals, jellyfish, marine plants, and much more. One of the main attractions showcased in the aquarium’s main tank is a sunfish, which can only be found in a few aquariums around the world due to their unique and demanding requirements of care. Sunfish are the largest bony fish in the world, and can grow to over 3 meters in length and weigh over 2 tons.
