The coastal town of Cascais, located just 30 km. from Lisbon, is where you will find one of the newest additions to the Pousadas of Portugal hotels. Cascais began as a fishing village and became a popular destination in the 19th C. when the Portuguese Royal Family began visiting its sandy beaches and turned it into a cosmopolitan resort town. The town’s charm and proximity to Lisbon continues to lure nearby city dwellers, as well as tourists, who are looking for an escape from the city.
The Pousada de Cascais – Citadela de Cascais is a boutique hotel that is housed in the historic 16th C. Citadel of Cascais. The fortress was built to defend the coast and the entrance to the Tagus River. The Citadel served as the summer residence of the Royal Family and is the place where King D. Luís I died in 1889. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of the historic city center, as well as shops, restaurants and beaches.
The Citadel’s 126 guest rooms include rooms that are located in the barracks of the former fortress. Guest rooms have been fully renovated and outfitted with modern amenities, and include Standard rooms, larger Superior rooms (some with balcony, or marina/sea views), and spacious Junior Suites. There are two large 1 bedroom Suites that have a sitting area; one has a marina/sea view, and the other faces Citadela Square.
