Madrid’s Teatro Real (Royal Theater), one of Europe’s leading opera houses, launched its 2015-2016 season on September 4, 2015 with a performance of Sleeping Beauty by Staatsballet Berlin. The new season will include performances of operas including Roberto Devereux by Gaetano Donizetti, Alcina by George Friedrich Händel, Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi, and The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, along with concerts, recitals and the occasional ballet.
The Teatro Real is located in the Plaza de Oriente just opposite the Royal Palace. It was built on the site of an old theater and was completed in 1850. Over the years it had periods when it fell into disrepair and was shut down. After being closed for 9 years and undergoing extensive refurbishment the Teatro Real reopened in 1997 and regained the status it continues to enjoy today as a world class opera house. The theater offers tours daily that give the general public the chance to get a backstage tour of this impressive opera house, including stepping onto the stage, seeing the rehearsal rooms, accessing the Royal Box and visiting the luxurious dressing rooms.
