Ángel Crespo was one of the most significant Spanish poets and translators of the second half of the 20th century. He covered tons of literary bases, writing 30+ books of poetry and translating an additional 20+ works (including Dante, Petrarch, etc.).
His work often touches on surrealist imagery, yet also references more classicist themes such as nature and renaissance literature.
Here is the beginning of a poem called “Venecia Recorrida Por Un Caballo:”
Venice crossed by a horse
of night by a white horse
beast that advances
trotting through the air of the night
that still has no breeze horse
bewildered is a horse
remembered astonishments of light
already at a fine gallop
like a stag a hind
a unicorn horse of undulating mane
that does not move the breeze…
