Casa Leopoldo, the landmark restaurant located in the Raval section of Barcelona’s Old Quarter, has reopened to much fanfare after its long run came to an end when they closed in 2015. The iconic restaurant that was established in 1936 and was considered an institution has now been reborn under the guidance of two of Barcelona’s highly acclaimed chefs, Romain Fornell and Oscar Manresa. Each has built an impressive culinary empire that continues to grow and expand their culinary boundaries, and Casa Leopoldo would be the second restaurant they collaborated on together.
These friends and business partners teamed up to save Casa Leopoldo, after they passed it one day and saw that it had shut down. Not wanting to see such an institution disappear, they decided to partner together to bring back the restaurant that had been heralded for its traditional Catalan cuisine for so many years. Rather than reinvent the legendary restaurant, the chefs have preserved its essence by paying homage to its classic dishes. Traditional favorites such as Rabo de Toro (oxtail stew), Cap i Pota (stew made from pigs’ head and trotters), and Arroz Negro con Sepia (black rice with cuttlefish) can be found on the menu, just as they were when the restaurant first opened its doors.
The interior decor was also retained and just refreshed a bit, so diners can still enjoy the classic style of the wood beamed ceilings and hand-painted tiles. In reviving Casa Leopoldo, chefs Fornell and Manresa have revived a restaurant that has always been from and for Barcelona, and in doing so they are carrying on the tradition of introducing the local culture to its diners through its original cuisine.
