The picturesque medieval town of Guimarães is located about 30 miles northeast of Porto, in the heart of the Minho region. It is the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and was the country’s first capital. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and will be the European Capital of Culture in 2012. For more information on the city, click here.
In the heart of the town is the Pousada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, with 16 rooms. This enchanting Pousada was created by combining a series of 16th C. townhouses which overlook the town’s quaint main square, Largo da Oliveira (Olive Tree Square). Its cozy room decorations, with wood-beamed ceilings and tile floors, reflect the Pousada’s old world charm.
NOTE – As of January 2013 the Pousada de Guimarães – Nossa Senhora da Oliveira no longer belongs to Pousadas de Portugal chain. For more information on all of the Pousadas, click here.
