As the capital of Portugal and the oldest city in Western Europe, Lisbon is a city rich in history. From historic castles, cathedrals and monasteries, to museums, trams, and charming neighborhoods, there is something for every visitor. One of the best ways to get acquainted with Lisbon is to take a private walking tour.
This 3 hour private walking tour focuses on the Baixa, Chiado and Alfama districts in the very heart of the city center. Your guide will lead you through the historic streets and tell you about the city’s history, the different neighborhoods, and historic landmarks, such as:
- Rossio Square and Rossio Station
- Praça da Figueira
- Chiado and Carmo Square
- Alfama, Mouraria, Fado Vadio mural, Miradouro de Santa Luzia
- Praça do Comercio
You will learn about the impact the Great Earthquake of 1755 had on the city’s layout, the 1974 Carnation Revolution and the end of the dictatorship, a history of Fado as depicted in the Fado Vadio mural, and what it’s like to live in the Mouraria and the Alfama, the city’s oldest quarter.
Along your leisurely 3 km/2 mile journey there will be stops to try Portugal’s famous pastel de nata custard tart, enjoy a glass of local wine and a snack. The tour will conclude at the Praça do Comercio at the edge of the Tagus River.
