The picturesque village of Amares is located in the heart of the Minho region in northern Portugal, just 64 km. northeast of Porto, and 14 km. northeast of Braga. The area is a perfect place to go for a drive and explore, as you can enjoy the narrow, winding roads that take you through the charming villages that dot the lush countryside. Situated between the Cávado River and Serra do Gerês mountains, this fertile region is known for its production of oranges and vinho verde (“green wine”).
The history of Amares dates back to the time of the founding on the nation, and was highly influenced by the Benedictine and Cistercian religious orders who founded monasteries in the area. One such monastery is Santa Maria do Bouro, which was built in the 12th C. and today operates as the Pousada de Amares.
The shell of the Pousada was painstakingly restored and maintains the traditional architecture of the original Cistercian monastery, with its stone archways and vaulted ceilings. The interior, however, has been transformed and guests can enjoy all of the modern conveniences you would expect from hotel of this category. The 32 guest rooms are contemporary in design and include Standard rooms, as well as two spacious Suites that have a living room and separate bedroom.
