Prior to the 15th Century, Barcelona had a thriving Jewish community within the Gothic Quarter centered around the Call, or Jewish Quarter, which was the most important cultural center in Barcelona during medieval times.
The Jewish Heritage Barcelona Tour will cover the areas associated with Jewish history in Barcelona, and includes a visit to the historic Major Synagogue which dates from 1391 and is claimed by some to be the oldest in Europe. For more information on the synagogue, click here.
The 4 hour private tour will take place in the Gothic Quarter, and about half of the tour can be dedicated to the history and sites related to the quarter’s Jewish heritage. The tour can be customized to meet your specific interests.
The suggested itinerary for the tour focuses on various aspects of Jewish heritage in Barcelona:
- Major Synagogue
- Monday – Friday from 10:30am – 2:30pm and 3:45pm – 6:30pm
- Saturday – closed
- Sunday from 10:30am – 3:00pm
- Call Interpretation Center (Museu d’Història de Barcelona – El Call) – museum that traces the Call’s urban tissue throughout history, starting from its foundation during Roman times until the urban interventions in the 19th and 20th Centuries
- Wednesday from 11am – 2pm
- Saturday and Sunday from 11am – 7pm
- Daily lives of Jews in medieval Barcelona in the Gothic Quarter – areas of interest: Plaza Nova, Carrer Bisbe, Plaza Sant Felip Neri, entrance to the Jewish area: Carrer de la Fruita, Marlet, Call, Banys Vells, etc.
- Role played by Jews in the history of the Crown of Aragón and its relationship with the Royal House – areas of interest: Palau Reial, the Plaza and the Palau del Lloctinent
- Role played by Jews in commerce in Barcelona – area of interest is La Ribera
- Boundries of the Jewish Quarter – Carrer de Sant Honorat (eastern boundary), Carrer de Sant Server i baixada de Santa Eulàlia (northern boundary)
- Call Menor – the Minor Call was an urban development planned in the 13th C. with 5 blocks of houses, a synagogue and a central square
Note: in order to visit both the Synagogue and the Call Interpretation Center during the tour we recommend that you schedule the tour for a Wednesday morning or a Sunday
