Private Tours in Madrid – Walking Tour of Madrid of the Habsburgs & Bourbons – 4 Hours

January 5, 2015 By International Lodging Corporation

The Habsburg dynasty (los Austrias) ruled Spain during its Golden Age and established Madrid as the capital of the country. During their reign in the 16th and 17th centuries the old center of the city was transformed with the construction of many of the city’s historic buildings around the area of the Plaza Mayor.

The Bourbon dynasty reigned after the Habsburgs, and they continued the transformation and expansion of the city. They are responsible for commissioning some of Madrid’s most iconic buildings, including the Royal Palace, the Cibeles and Neptune fountains, and the Prado Museum.

On this 4 hour private walking tour you will explore the Madrid of the Habsburgs combined with the Madrid of the Bourbons, spanning the 16th to the 19th centuries. In the Madrid of the Habsburgs you will learn about the development of the area around the Plaza Mayor, the Casa de la Villa square and the Puerta del Sol, which marked the eastern gate of the city under their reign.

The Bourbons expanded the boundary of the city beyond the Puerta del Sol to the Prado Museum and Retiro Park.  The Bourbon dynasty was inspired by the court of Versailles and you can see the French influence in the buildings they commissioned, including the Royal Palace, with its elegant Plaza del Oriente and Royal Theater, the Bank of Spain building, the beautiful Cibeles and Neptune fountains, and the world-renowned Prado Museum.

All tours can be customized to meet your specific interests.

Private Tours in Madrid – Walking Tour of Madrid of the Habsburgs – 3 Hours

January 5, 2015 By International Lodging Corporation

ILC-blog-Private-Tours-Madrid-Walking-Tour-of-los-AustriasExplore Madrid of los Austrias (the Austrians) to learn about the history of Madrid during Spain’s Golden Age. The Habsburgs  were the Austrian royal dynasty who were responsible for moving the capital from Toledo to Madrid in the 16th C. and commissioning many of the buildings and monuments found in the old center of the city.

On this 3 hour private walking tour you will discover the history and places in Madrid related to the city’s growth as the capital from the 16th – 17th centuries under the reign of the Habsburgs.

Learn about the history of the Plaza Mayor, Cuchilleros Arch and the narrow streets that surround the plaza. Stroll past the Casa de la Villa square (the old Town Hall) and the Casa de Cisneros palace. Visit the famous San Miguel food market and stop for a snack at the popular Chocolatería San Ginés to try their specialty, chocolate con churros (light, crispy sticks of deep-fried dough). Continue on to the Puerta del Sol, which once marked the eastern gate of the city. Today the Puerta del Sol is the symbolic center of the city, where people come from all over Spain and the world to celebrate the New Year, as well as the literal starting point for all roads out of Madrid (noted by the Kilometer Zero plaque).

January 5, 2015 By International Lodging Corporation

ILC-blog-Private-Tours-Madrid-Prado-Museum-TourNo visit to Madrid would be complete without a visit to the Prado Museum, which is considered one of the top museums in the world. With over 1,300 works of art on display and a collection of 8,600 paintings and over 700 sculptures, the Prado has one of the largest and most impressive collections in the world. It would take days to see the museum’s entire collection that is on display.

On this 3 hour private tour will be met at your hotel by your guide, and together you will travel to the museum. On your way to the museum your guide will begin to tell you about the history and background of the Prado. When you arrive at the museum you will bypass the general entry line and enter through the special access entrance that is reserved for licensed guides.

Your guide will ensure that you do not miss any of the most important works of art included in the museum, such as Las Meninas by Velázquez, The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest by El Greco, or The Cardinal by Raphael, to name a few. The tour of the highlights of the museum takes about 90-120 minutes.

The visit can be completely customized to focus on the type of art you are interested in, whether it be by specific artist, school (e.g. Spanish, Flemish and Dutch, Italian, German, etc.), century, or type (e.g. painting, sculpture, print, etc.).
