Sangria is an internationally-loved specialty of Spain, and is the perfect beverage for gatherings all year round. It is especially refreshing during the warm summer months, and is perfect for barbecues and backyard gatherings with friends and family.
As you fire up the grill, don’t forget to make a pitcher (or two) of sangria to make the crowd come alive.
Here’s a recipe that is easy to make and can be partially prepared in advance. Since red wine is the main ingredient, use your favorite full-bodied red wine that is ready to drink.
Ingredients:
- One 750 ml bottle of red wine (such as Rioja, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Shiraz)
- ¼ cup of brandy
- 2 tbsp sugar (add more if you like it sweeter)
- 2 cups of 7-Up (or another lemon/lime flavored soda)
- 1 lemon, cut into thin slices
- 1 orange, cut into thin slices
- 1 apple, cored and cut into bite-size chunks
Directions: It’s pretty easy. Just grab a pitcher and stir together the wine, brandy and sugar, until the sugar is dissolved. If you are making the sangria in advance, you can cover and store the wine-brandy-sugar mixture for up to 24 hours in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, just stir in the 7-Up and add the lemon, orange and apple, and you are good to go.
Serve in chilled wine glasses or over ice, and let the fun begin!
